HAMPTON ROADS TRANSIT (HRT), HAMPTON, VA, IS CELEBRATING THE 40th anniversary of its Elizabeth River Ferry. More than a hundred people gathered at the North Landing Dock in Portsmouth recently to mark the occasion. “Over the last 40 years, we have moved more than 16.5 million riders back and forth across the Elizabeth River,” said William Harrell, HRT president and CEO. “These trips were made to travel to work, entertainment, shopping and other critical destinations.” As part of the celebrations, HRT announced the addition of two new ferries to its fleet. The Elizabeth River Ferry VI and VII are expected to arrive later this year. “The ferry service provides much more than just a quick way for people to get to work,” said Portsmouth Mayor Shannon Glover, “It played a pivotal role in the redevelopment and revitalization of Olde Towne Portsmouth.”
